The adherents of the traditional religion of Mwari and the ancestral spirits attach great respect to the environment. They argue, by violating or despoiling it, they will be depriving their deity, Mwari, and the spirits of a home to live in. As such these sacred areas and mountains are ‘set aside’ and not meant to be touched. Through this they provide ecologically pristine environments. Traditionally important people such as chiefs and elders are buried in the mountains. Individual and groups are not allowed visiting a sacred place or its environs without the accompaniment of the official priest or priestess or nominated appointee.
The burial places for local chiefs to the east of the Providential pass are Wadana and Ruvhure. Wadana river valley or Ngazi pass is where Fredrick Selous and the Pioneer column spent an anxious night after crossing through the Lowveld.
