Prior to its silting up these pools were home to many hippo’s and quite a few legends. The origins of the name Makapaile is Shangaan. According to oral tradition, it is drawn from a man who lived as a hermit in the vicinity of the pool at the beginning of time. He existed largely on fish. His origins and lifestyle has been passed from one generation to another.
There is also a strong belief that Makapaile Pool harboured very large caves under water that were dwellings for the njuzu (water sprites). Part fish, part human, they are shy of human beings, only seen by chance particularly at dawn or dusk or on misty days. Their language is one of clicking and clattering sound. However, existence of mermaids remains an open argument between modern scientists who refute their existence, and traditional Africans who strongly believe in their existence.
