In an area with such impressive granite outcrops it is not surprising that they are surrounded by myth, religion and culture.Set aside as a dwelling place for ancestral spirits where biodiversity is preserved. Strict taboo prevents people from cutting down trees in sacred areas on these mountains and collecting firewood. Due to the cultural stigma forbidding people to cut down or collect firewood in the mountains they remain conserved. Often noted that many people have disappeared in some of the mountains. Whether this can be confirmed or not people are generally fearful to pass through the mountains or the forests. In the process of protecting the sacredness of the mountain, the forests are also preserved. These Indigenous Knowledge Systems have proven effective in the past at maintaining these environments in pristine conditions. These mountains will contain a Gadzingo: sacred place, associated with particular clans sacred usually for chiefs and clan ancestors to inhabit. Also known as a mapa, a place where chieftainship is conferred. The forested areas are referred to as Ramba Kutemwa: a sacred grove, literally meaning “forbidden to cut”.
