The monument commemorates the train derailment that occurred on 11 September 1914 in the Hex River Valley. According to the units website, the train was a troop train transporting soldiers of the Kaffrarian Rifles Unit from their base in East London to Cape Town. The troops were destined to fight in the then Union of South Africa's campaign in German South West Africa (now Namibia) as past of its' World War One commitments. Ten non-commissioned officers and men were killed, with another one hundred and three soldiers seriously injured.
