One tunnel has railway tracks, and the other one is a service tunnel. There are two tunnels very close to each other. The older tunnel was completed in 1876, and is Southern Africa's oldest railway tunnel. It has stone dressed masonry portals, is straight and is not lined on the inside. The jeep track now goes through this tunnel. In 1929 the second tunnel was completed due to the railway track being re-laid to accommodate larger locomotives. This tunnel is concrete lined and curved, with the railway line still in place. This tunnel remained in use until 1989, when the pass was closed to all rail traffic.
