Diepkloof Rock Shelter, located in the Western Cape of South Africa, is a significant archaeological site known for its evidence of early human symbolic behavior. This rock shelter contains some of the earliest known engravings on ostrich eggshells, dating back around 60,000 years². These engravings are believed to represent early forms of symbolic communication².
The shelter itself is situated near Elands Bay, about 150 kilometers north of Cape Town, and overlooks the Verlorenvlei River². It has been a site of continuous human occupation from approximately 130,000 to 45,000 years ago, providing a rich record of Middle Stone Age artifacts². The site was first excavated in 1973 and has since been a focus of extensive archaeological research².
In 2024, Diepkloof Rock Shelter was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "The Emergence of Modern Human Behaviour: The Pleistocene Occupation Sites of South Africa".
