“Montagu's tractor rides are known throughout the country, and it remains an experience to ride with Niel Burger on his monstrous machine along a narrow winding path up the side of the mountain. The story of Niel and his tractor rides actually comes a long way. He says that he bought this particular tractor for farm work about twenty years ago. Being a mountain climber, he always wondered if the tractor could also climb mountains. So it happens that one afternoon his wife, Elize, drives to town, and he gets the chance to climb the mountain with the tractor. ''She would probably have divorced me if she found out what an irresponsible thing I was doing.'' He then came halfway upthe mountain that day. When Elize drove to town again one day, the chains and crowbars were ready to move away the boulders that were still in the way. Niel and a few helpers hurried out of the mountain. When Elize came home that evening, he had been sitting downstairs again for a long time. He then said nothing about the fact that he and the blue tractor were on top of the 1,600 m high mountain. As it happens, people later heard about this ride, and before long they wanted to join. This is how Niel began to gradually improve the particular path up the mountain. This driving has become almost a full-time job. These days he takes up to 200 people a day up the mountain. Practical man that he is, Niel has now built two of these special tractors and trailers with which he and his sons can go up the mountain twice a day. In winter it goes through the snow too. Such a trek lasts about three hours. The first shift starts down on his farm, Protea, there at the top of the Burgerspass on the Koo road between Montagu and Touwsrivier. It ends high above Robertson, right in the shadow of Arangieskop. You won't get a better view for so little physical effort. Where it takes mountain climbers three to four hours if they climb all the way up, it only takes 1½ hours at a sit-sit pace - with a lot of stopping time for looking around included - for the passengers to get to the top of the mountain with the tractor. Upstairs, Niel treats you to Montagu muscadel or grape juice in a very special mountain hut. The second stage of the ride goes downhill, foot by foot, into a romantic pine forest where potjie food is served. Once you sit down, you won't leave again, because it's now a top place to visit. The kids will love Niel's glider-like slide. A novelty is the lodgings that the Burghers have now set up on the farm. I can't really keep up with what's going on on Protea, but when I was last there, Niel had already set up an old mill, two mountain huts and an old barn as places to spend the night. The barn is now for school and student groups who want to stay there, and the mill for honeymooners looking for something "different". To book a ride with Niel on the tractor, Montagu's advertising office tel. 023-614-2471 is called. For accommodation on the farm, you can call the farm at. 023-614-3012. “Montagu on the western end of the Little Karoo, lies northeast of the Langberg Mountains. The town was named after the then Colonial Secretary of the Cape Colony, John Montagu” - Chris Smit, 2024/05/01
“Montagu is the western gateway to the Klein Karoo, situated on the route 62 between the Waboom- & Langeberg mountain,. The Keisie and Kingna Rivers have their confluence in Montagu, before running through Cogman's Kloof to Ashton and the Breede River. The town has a peaceful atmosphere with a farm like appearance and beautiful Cape Dutch Homesteads” - Chris Smit, 2009/12/19
