Seymour (formerly spelled Seymore) is a small town located in the Amatole District Municipality of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. Established in 1853, it was named after Colonel Charles Seymour, who served as Military Secretary to Governor Sir George Cathcart. Although the town once played an important administrative role, it has experienced gradual decline over the years. Today, it is best known as an entry point to the nearby Mpofu Game Reserve and lies close to the Eastern Cape’s recognized wine-producing region.
In its early history, Seymour functioned as a strategic buffer zone between the Cape Colony and Xhosa territories. Over time, it evolved into a modest agricultural community. The arrival of the railway in the early 1900s brought a short-lived economic boost, making it easier to transport local produce and goods through Fort Beaufort and surrounding areas.
There is a police station, clinic and post office and a bar and grill in the town. For more information visitors can contact the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality.
