Groenkloof Nature Reserve located near the famous Fountain valley. The nature reserve features low broken ridges varying in steepness, with variety of wildlife and woody species. The reserve dates back to the 1895, when the southern outskirts of Pretoria was declared a national sanctuary by President Paul Kruger in order to protect the Oribi and other game species which were being wiped by hunters. Beginning of 1900 the other portion was rented out for plantation for production of paper and wood. Thus the nature reserve natural environment have been preserved. In 1994 the reserve became the responsibility of the nature conservation and resorts section of the City Of Tshwane Municipality. In 1999 game was reintroduced into the reserve. This included Impala, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest and Ostrich. Today a variety of activities are on for all age groups and interest groups. These includes hiking trails, mountain biking, horse trails, night drives, game viewing, youth camping, outdoor sporting and picnicking. Overnight accommodation is available. All visitors to the reserve need to pay an entrance fee and then other payments is made depending on various activities individuals would like to participate. (Updated Dec-12).
