Cogmans Kloof Pass, built by Thomas Bain during the 1980s, traverses the Langeberg between Ashton and Montagu along the course of the Kingna river. At the southern end of the Kloof, yellowish-brown phyllites of the Malmesbury Group underlie the folded, steeply tilted sandstone of the Table Mountain Group. This gives rise to the spectacular scenery in the area around Bains Rock tunnel. The pass was named after the Cogmans, a Khoikoi tribe, that attacked the Land of Waveren Military Post in 1701.
