Probably the best remaining example of Frontier War fortifications. The fort played a vital role in the 8th Frontier War of 1850. The fort was completed in 1836, and was named in honour of the Voortrekker leader. Piet Retief. The infrastructure is not maintained and in a state of disrepair. It remains well worth a visit.
